It Begins

I’m not sure when it began, but I think it was with Green Day. At any length, the process was completed by Blink-182. The "dumbing-down" of yet another section of popular media… the watering-down of punk rock into another sickening sweet product suitable for mass consumption. Another fucking Big-Mac. Yes, its fast. Yes, its loud. But, it’s still just another fucking love song. I got into punk because it was different.

It had something to say. It was disturbing. It was violent. It provoked and educated. Now, my comrades, we have to suffer through "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" in muzak form at the local Vons. It has to stop.

In coming months, I hope to reverse some of this corruption. Just as MTV and OC Weekly have brought us to the intellectual desert that is popular music, the news media has done the same for political coverage and information. We are pelted with mind-numbing sound bites and irrelevant human interest stories. We sit through soap opera dramas about Hollywood celebrities. When the local news media dedicates two-hours to a car chase but still averages less than one-minute of world news, how much of what we are being fed can really be called "news." Yes, its fast. Yes, its loud. But, its still just another fucking Big-Mac. It has to stop.

That’s where I come in. I will attempt to bring you intelligent commentary and insight on current issues and events. I will attempt to provoke discussion and interest in things which affect our lives. I will attempt to piss you off. But, most importantly, I will attempt to make you think. Do I expect you do agree with me? Fuck, no! Scream, yell, argue, fight, write…think! I want to leave a foul taste in your mouth, just like any good ‘ol fashioned punk rock song. If I fed you the Big-Mac, you wouldn’t care. Remember, if it doesn’t taste good, it’s probably good for you.
