Engines of Aggression

"4 Song EP"
EOA Records

Grade: B+
Posted 9/24/01

With a million different genres of music these days, Engines of Aggression display “the more things change… the more they stay the same.”    If you’re a fan of this aggro-industrial L.A. outfit from back in the day, then the time the band has spent away was well worth the wait.  Four of Engines of Aggressions new songs are on this disc, and the first thing you notice is that the old tag of being just another Ministry on the lighter side, or a NIN rip-off are as invalid a statement as one could make.  What we have here is aggro-intense industrial metal by Tripp Holland and new members Gene on drums and Michael on guitar, and I’m not sure who played bass on here.  This is some hardcore scary ass shit right here, “The New Shanghai” and “Go Fanatic” in particular.  Check out the official Engines of Aggression website, and get your hands on a copy of this CD.  Good stuff Holmes!

Pennywise

"Land Of The Free"
Epitaph Records

Grade: A
Posted 9/24/01

Starting off with blazing sirens at the beginning of the first song, “Time Marches On,” I knew that the new Pennywise album, "Land of the Free,” was a keeper.  Pennywise has a great anti-authoritarian message with blazing guitars, pounding drumbeats and enthralling vocals.  The title track is a perfect example of the bands stance on independence, as lead singer, Fletcher commands, “Land of the free: Free to control your life.”  The song additionally boasts experimental crunchy guitar hooks, which are just as intriguing as the first single and very well received, “Fuck Authority.”  My favorite line of the song is, “Frustration, domination, feel the rage of a new generation.”  This album embodies the spirit of punk rock and gives something you just cant get from mainstream punk bands-inspiration.

Weezer

"Self Titled Green Album"
Geffen Records

Grade: A
Posted 9/24/01

Thirty minutes of foot thumping, head nodding, blissful rock and roll.  Weezer has finally returned with the self-titled CD, now commonly referred to as “the green album.”  The band has not lost one ounce of catchy and fun rock, that they are known and loved for.  The album is excellent from start to finish.  Easily being one of the best records of this year.  Some of the titles that I often crave include, “Photograph,” Island In The Sun,” and “Knock-Down-Drag-Out.”  The albums first single, “Hash Pipe” is a heavy guitar driven rock song that shows that Weezer can rock with the best of them.  I am sick of NSYNC and that damn NOW 85 or what ever it is being on the top of the charts, so I have a simple request.  I don’t want to sound forceful, but you must go out and buy this album right now.  Okay, thanks.

Shades Apart

"Sonic Boom"

Grade: C+
Posted 9/24/01

Polished, talented, power trio from Jersey is good, but a little lacking in the rawness that we like here at DeadontheWeb.com.  Their music is somewhere in between the Foo Fighters meets Elvis Costello but with a little less range. Singer Mark V. has a gravel pit voice that helps add a little edge to the poppy alternative sound. The first song on the album “conspiracy” is a paranoid little ditty that shows the bands ability to tell almost seamless stories in their songs. This is an album you really have to listen to a few times, before you appreciate it.

The Suicide Machines

"Steel This Record"
Hollywood Records

Grade: A
Posted 9/24/01

The Suicide Machines are a very unpredictable band.  I will explain this statement with a brief recording history of the band.  They started off with a fresh blend of punk and ska on the bands 1996 Hollywood records debut, “Destruction By Definition.”  A song with yielded the hit, “No Face,” and shot the band into radio land stardom.  Then they switched gears releasing, 1998’s hard-core punk enthused “Battle Hymns.”  Then in 2000 they released the power-pop and very radio friendly record, simply self-titled.  Now they are back again, coming full circle with an album that blends punk, ska, hard-core punk, power-pop.  I was pleasantly surprised with this album, because I have been a fan of the band before they signed to Hollywood records-a label that has released the aforementioned four-studio albums-and this really rocks.  Before I always thought they would have a very hard time duplicating the success of “Destruction By Definition,” but with “Steel This Record,” I think they have done it.  Some of the standout tracks include, “Honor Among Themselves,” Bleeding Heart,” the thought provoking, “Scars,” and a rocking rendition of REM’s anthem, “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).”  The Suicide Machines are a great band because they are not afraid to take chances and put out albums that explore different styles of music and sing about their political, social and economic issues.  The title of the new album is “Steel This Record,” but I would just say buy this record.

Sum 41

"All Killer no Filler"
Island Records

Grade: B-
Posted 9/24/01

The next generation in pop punk has arrived. Watch out Blink 182, Sum 41 is on the rise in the commercial mainstream market of today.  Your young, on a major label, and can change your name to something cool like Bizzy D, or Brown Sound. So what to you next? You bring out a pretty cool release in All killer No filler , with odes to metal, young slackers and the angst of teenagers around the world. From their Iron Maiden like Introduction to Destruction, to the  KROQ main stay Fat Lip. It’s all perky punk fun from suburban America, not much edge. But plenty of killer guitar riffs, and some quality “masterbassing” from the  bassist Cone.  The band really seems to connect with the younger generation, maybe it’s because the band is probably younger than half the people that attend their shows.

The Leftovers

Well Folks here it is, the proof you all needed, these Sweden-Boys play the dirty fuckin RocknRoll....... Holy shit I give this band most improved status.......I got the CD some month ago from Mr. Suit himself (singer of this band) and hell I love it, its the "SHIT" go away with Gluecifer and all that shit nobody needs that, let the young boys kick our asses, I'm sure they are playing a great Live show not that bad shit like the other "great" RocknRoller whoever they are?????????? These 5 Fuckers got the sound Man... 11 songs incl. "Stuck in 3rd gear" covered by the Devil Dogs..... I guess they better come over to play some shows before we "Germans" go crazy.. Mr.Suit and his guys are doing great work on their instruments they're playing so powerful with a big Heart for RocknRoll...... A whole bunch of talent and you've the ingredients of a pretty potent RocknRoll "beast"... The perfect mix of dirty rock&punk attitude makes this a must have for the partyin´ crowd. River City High

"River City High Won't Turn Down"
Big Wheel Recreation/Dog House Records

Grade: C
Posted 9/24/01

River City High is a cool rock band.  They have appealing guitar hooks and strong vocals.  From listening to the bands new album, “River City High Won’t Turn Down,” I get this impression.  River City High has all the elements of a great rock band but they just seem to lack sincerity.  Maybe it was just this record but I feel the band just needs to focus on their lyrics a bit more then playing together as a sold unit-because they have that nailed.  River City High is nothing superbly original but they are a rocking distraction.

Sometimes I wonder if the people that send us their music to review, actually look at the magazine at all? Deadontheweb usually tries to be open and accept Indy music from all genres of music. But some cd’s are just to mainstream for us to even know what to say.  It’s not bad; it’s just not for us. Please, before you send your music give us the respect of checking out our site to see if you fit the genre of DeadOnTheWeb.com!

Guttermouth

"Covered With Ants"
Epitaph Records

Grade: B
Posted 9/24/01

I have never been a huge fan of Guttermouth.  I always had respect for the band but I just never was interested in most of the bands newer albums.  I thought that “Friendly People” was a magnificent album but they have not duplicated that success until the bands newest album, “Covered With Ants.”  The bands first album after jumping ship from Nitro records to punk’s big time at Epitaph records.  This album is extremely rocking and has plenty of Guttermouth’s trademark, hilarious lyrics.  With tong and cheek song titles like “Can I Borrow Some Ambition,” Looking Good Is All That Matters,” and “Cram It Up Your Ass,” it is obvious that Guttermouth has not lost one ounce of their controversial nature.  This album is packed with fast and furious punk rock with a humorous edge and is a must-have for any fan of punk rock.

Feel The Rise

"EP"
Self Released

Grade: A
Posted 9/24/01

You may not have heard of Feel The Rise yet, but you should.  Combining intricate guitar lines with big base lines, thundering drumbeats and melodic vocals to enthuse a sound that is both innovative and powerful.  Feel The Rise has a sound that is similar to bands like Rage Against The Machine and some of the hard rock sounds on the radio, but this band is a cut above the rest.  The guitar lines wave through crunchy hooks to unique solos, reminiscent of rock legends, The Doors.  With politically charged lyrics, the band provided a melody with a message.  Some of the standout tracks on the band self-released album include “Enemy On The Frontline, “When The Day Breaks” and  “Flick The Switch.”  Feel The Rise is an amazing band and I would definitely recommend any fans of hard, energetic and powerful music to check this album out and catch the bands incredible live show.  To get information on the band you can visit their web-sight at .

Hair Metal To the 10th power, This album would be great!!! Yeah, about 15 years ago! From its Magic the gathering cover to the solo shot of Mr. Cline playing his flying V guitar on the back this is a 80’s style metal album. Don’t get me wrong the guitar work is great , it’s just a style that went the way of the dinosaurs. Ask all the rest of the guitar gods that ruled the air waves for a short stint back in the 80’s.   If you like metal you might like David Neil Cline’s Malefic Influence .
