The
Reducers Grade:
B+
|
Here at DeadOnTheWeb.com
we know that when TKO records sends us a new cd it's gonna stomp us in to
the ground. This new release from San Francisco's very own Reducers are no
exception! Their style of catchy punk rock is a great combination of
late 70's punk meets well..... their own version of punk today. Not only
they write strong music that sticks to you like stink on shit, but their
lyrical content is also something that sticks. One particular song on this
CD that I can totally to relate to, especially living in OC, is a song
called "The Mill". "The Mill" is about something that
we all can do without in this society.....gossip and shit slinging. You
know what Im talking about! People that have nothing better to do than
judge people they hardly know and then talk gossip about them to everyone.
But they are not the only ones to blame, the people that want to hear all
if that shit are to be blamed all the same. Anyway, hop over to www.tkorecords.com
and check them and all TKO bands out! - Scott Harding

Welt Grade:

Welt is a band I came
across way back in , well shit a long time ago and they knocked the socks
off me then and they still do! “A Brand New Dream” is the newest
release from Welt and is the second full length put out on BYO Records.
And with a total of about 4 full lengths under their belts, Welt have
become more and more professional sounding with each release. On this cd
they are together in all ways shape and form. I have to say that this
particular cd seems to have a Social Distortion essence to it and it is a
bit more mellow than the earlier Welt. But in no does that effect the
power this band produces on “A Brand New Dream”.

The
Unseen Grade:
A+
|
Awww
yes, this band proves to me that punk is the best music ever to slime the
surface of this wretched planet. Infact my Mohawk stiffened after the
first few riffs of this disc. The Unseen have been around for about 10
years now and kicked out a few discs in this time but I have to say this
one is my favorite. And it makes me proud to be punk when bands like this
not only tear it up in their music but also send an intelligent message
out to all that are open to listen. Songs about how fucked up it is when
parents beat their kids or how six year old kids are packing heat and not
to mention that racism is just unacceptable in any way, well songs like
this don’t get played to the masses and they should! No, instead we have
to hear about how some hormone driven kid is trying to get laid and how
much money he is making by pimp’n bitches in his front yard. Or how some
teenage slut did it again and openly admits to being “Not that
Innocent”.
It makes me sick when people criticize punk and say that it’s a
load of crap with senseless meaning. Well I have this to say to you
fuckwads who say this, go get yourself a copy of this Unseen CD and listen
to what they have to say., then take a listen to some lyrics by shit dips
like nsync and that hooker Brittney and then tell me who is singing about
meaningless topics! “The Anger and the Truth” the anthem disc for
people that want to make a difference!

Manic
Hispanic Grade:
A
|
The Recline is the second release from the funniest cover/spoof punk band ever to grace the floors of Taco Bell. Yeah Im talk’n about Manic Hispanic. Taking the tunes of popular punk songs and tossing in their own lyrics Mexican style is what these vatos do best. Even the cover and name of this album is a spoof of The Decline of Western Civilization! And incase you didn’t know Manic Hispanic made up of members of The Cadillac Tramps, The Adolescents, the Grabbers and more. So what can you expect from this cd? Well expect great spoof remakes of Der Weinerschnitzel from The Decedents, Atomic Garden from Bad Religion, Mommy’s Little Monster form Social Distortion, Ruby Soho from rancid and 8 more tunes to bash your piñata to! I don’t give out to many A’s on my report card but how could I not on this one!?!?! This whole cd is nothing but funny shit! Pick up your copy of The Decline off BYO’s website and amaze your friends! - Frank Rizzo

The
Hellions Grade:

So it’s been a long time since you have heard some good new real punk, right? Well if that’s the case and your sick of these new teenie boppers fronting to be a punk bands only to deliver watered down wuss rock emos shit then and it’s starting to make you feel ill, Then fear not, I have the cure to your disease! This cure comes in the form of a cd with created by madmen who call themselves The Hellions. Pop this pill in your cd player and make sure the volume is cranked to 10 (or higher if you have the capabilities) press play and listen till cd ends, and don’t forget the hidden track that just so happens to be an excellent cove of Black Flags “Rise Above”. Do this twice daily and repeat if necessary! The Hellions take punk to a new level of hardness and then beyond. And after listening to this it’s no surprise that The Hellions line-up features ex-Speedealer/Billyclub front man Dave Woodard on vocals, ex-Rigor Mortis/current Gwar bassist Casey Orr on bass, ex-Hagfish/Welt/Diesel Boy drummer Scott Carter, and Mike Todd Bodine on guitar. So if this cure doesn’t work for you then all I can say is grab a baseball bat and smash the stereo of the emo kid next door. It might not stop your illness but hey, you’ll feel a lot better! - Frank Rizzo

Conshafter Grade:

Pathetic pop punk is how these violent femmes meets weezer style kids describe themselves. But I have to disagree. Pop punk? Nah, I wouldn’t say that but they do have a great original sound that kinda sticks to you like a fly on pooh. That’s right I said pooh. Pathetic? Well the only thing I have to say is pathetic about them is they admit in “Road Trip” that they are jamming to Blink 182 while they mosh in the back seat of the car. Yuck I hate Blink, but Conshafter’s lyrics are witty and pretty humorous. Depression, shitty jobs, girls that just seem to stick around and loosing your chick to some zima sippin white trash shithead with a mustache are just a few topics of choice on this disc. These guys are a must for any Wezzer fan and beyond. Check them out! - Emo Bob

Billyclub Grade:

|
Are you ready to strain
your ear drums and burst some blood vessels?
Well the your ready for Billyclub! Formed from the ashes of such
punk luminaries as The UK Subs and The Exploited, Billyclub is a punk punk
and more punk hardcore style. No gimmicks, no love songs, and no trendy
Hurley or Abercrombie t-shirts here. No Sir! That’s because they don’t need that shit to prove their
point. Billyclub isn’t there to tell you what to do or how to score a
chick, nope, they are here to tell you how it is without the bullshit.
They sing about the stuff you always want t say to someone but just
don’t seem to have the balls to say it yourself. Im not sure
what the names of the songs are because its not listed in the cd jacket
but Ill call the song “Fuck you very much”. This song is by far my
favorite because that’s how I feel about most people I come across
today. So if you as angry as I am and need to let out some steam then go
to your favorite mom and pop indy music store or take a trip to www.hellorecords.com
and get yourself a copy of
this and start offending people! - Johnny Fierello

TSOL Grade:

There is a god Full blown Old School punk with intensity and the very edge of resentment that made punk the staple of life it is now. Gentlemen Jack Grisham along with Ron Emory and Mike Roche get together again to show how punk is done when done right. Track two “Sodomy” is vintage T.S.O.L. that sounds plunked out of the air from the early eighties. With blistering guitar solos from Emory, and the trademark attitude that jack brings to the table. The same is true of track seven “In My Head” has the feeling that T.S.O.L. never left scene, with newcomer Jay O’Brien filling in seamlessly on drums. The only track that somewhat stands out as the semi-experimental song on the album would have to be song number nine “Socialite,” with piano and horn accompaniment which seemed a little off for their style. But if you have the new “Blink 182” and and cant wait till The “Green Day” show next month, go out and by T.S.O.L.’s “Disappear.” listen to it fifty time and see what being a snotty upstart punk is all about. - Tim Buctoo

The
Benjamins Grade:
B
|
You know a cd is good when you give it to a friend ,and it takes 2 and a half months to get it back. This was the case with the benjamins new release "The Art Of Disappointment" on Drive Thru Records. I had to literally go and steal back the cd from my so-called buddies house so I could get this cd review done and off my conscious. Having said that lets get to the review of a real good cd. The benjamins new cd is really a damn good cd, reminiscent of the early angsty felling that you'd associate with geek rockers Weezer. And to be honest I like it as much as Weezers new release. It's not punk but has a good strong edge in some spaces, with lots of alternative college feeling and experimentation. It’s vocals and writing are sort of soft and mushy at times as with songs like “Shine,” but quite a good, listenable disc. With some really good guitar work and some great music writing produces gems like “Wonderful.” I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys are picked up by a major label soon, they have the radio ready sound down. - Tim Buctoo

Hi-Standard Grade:

Hi-Standard does it again with this new 4 song EP called Love Is A Battle Field. These punks have been a major force behind the rising Japanese underground music scene for quite some time and it’s no wonder whit songs like these. Each song on the EP is bombarded with catchy melodic riffs and choruses. My favorite song would have to be “Catch A Wave”. The beginning starts off like a classic Beach Boys Song but then tears into a short but sweet punk riff. And they even toss in a great cover of UB40’s hit “Can’t Help Falling In Love”! The only bad thing about this EP is that fact that it’s an EP and not a full length. 4 songs just don’t cut it with me, I need more! If your into melodic punk then this EP is a must. But beware; you might have them stuck in your head for days after. • Hi-Standard

The
Starting Line Grade:
C+
|
I have to give it up to Drive-Thru Records for picking some great bands. Rx Bandits, Midtown, and The Benjamins just to name a few. And now they give us The Starting Line. This band is made up of three talented musicians that can write some catchy music. Now, Im not saying they are bad or anything but they do sound just like New Found Glory to me and I am kinda getting tired of the whole emotional songs about chicks craze that is going on right now. Drive Thru, they have some great talent under their belts, but I hope they don’t start signing bands that are all the same because so far they are doing a pretty good job of not doing that. But hey, if you love emo and bands like New Found Glory then you will totally dig on The Starting Line. They have all the elements that make up a good emo band, melody, polished tight riffs and songs about chicks. • The Starting Line Official Page - Scott Harding
