DEADONTHERWEB.COM'S DBX CONTEST SHOW
5/11/01 @ The Galaxy in Santa Ana
Review and Photos By: FotoGirl

Another contest has been won from a DeadOnTheWeb subscriber and not it was time to give him what he deserved. Some killer GWAR and DBX paraphernalia and one night with DBX!!!!!

The first band to play was Havoc.
Lets’ see…Metallica?! Yes, they looked and sounded like Metallica! They had long hair and goatees! And head banging, they were all about head banging! The more the better! When I say they sounded like Metallica, I am talking about the old angry Metallica, like the “Kill them All” album. None of this Metallica and symphony shit. What happened? Havoc, was cool! Their song “Punk Metal” sums up the band. Lots of head banging, (have I mentioned head banging yet?) They were all about playing Fast, Fast, Fast and Hard! People in the pit were head banging, moshing, and screaming along! The drummer, Justin Gibbons, put all his energy into every beat. He had many solos during the show. The band even passed out a demo of the drums only!! Best part of the show…at the end of the last song, the singer/guitarist busted his guitar!!  I love that!  That's pure rock n roll!

      Next up was Tyranis
The crowd was in the pit, waiting anxiously. The band came onstage. The singer took the microphone and shouted, “EVERYBODY READY TO……. BANG YOUR HEAD?!?!” “Hell on Wheels!” and the guitars began to blare! The set  had begun. The band is original sounding. The singer can reach high notes similar to Axel Rose. Fans started to shout the lyrics, and head bang with the music. Halfway through the set, the lights went off, the stage lights kicked in, the moshing started. As the kids started moshing, security moved closer to the pit. I watched the security, and sorry guys, they were not intimated. They let it happened and did not fear of any imminent fights. My friend and I focused on the lead guitarist. He was amazing. He was extremely into playing his guitar, and intensely head banding. He was fascinating to watch. When the show ended, shortly after giving out there demos, I noticed a fan run up close to the stage. The singer reached down and handed her the song list. Very cool.

Last: Dave Brockie Experience.
David Brookie walked onto the stage holding a large framed picture. “ DUKE, DUKE!DUKE!” was chanted over and over again! (Duke, is the band’s mascot. He looks like the Spuds McKenzie dog.) The show, well, was it a band, or a comedy act? Similar style of music as with Gwar, except no costumes or spitting blood. (David Brookie’s band was formed so they could keep playing while they work on new material for GWAR) There were people in the pit, listening, laughing and dancing,,, always a good sign.

Several times during the show, David Brookie would talk. He’s against the corporate industry, but aren’t we all?! He made comments of his band ‘playing together for almost 20 years and still haven’t played a sold out show. Then some little yuppie’s kid puts together what he calls a band, and in no time he is playing sold out shows everywhere! His daddy probably owns the record company and has no idea of what music is, he just has power and money.’ Get the idea? David Brookie protests his anti-corporate policies by writing songs of “pooh and cocksuckers”. Yes, he personally said “pooh’ not shit, but pooh! I admire him. Keep playing your way! I am proud you stand your ground and release your anti-corporate messages to the world. We do agree I got a chance to meet the contest winner and his friend for tonight’s show. I tell you what.. THEY WERE DRUNK!! And having a BLAST!  I met them back stage, and they kept on begging me to photograph them. I had no idea who they were until the end of the show…now I understand. Congratulations!

So that was the show, my film was used up, my notepad scribbled upon, my drinks were empty and the music has ended….
