Mr. Firley

It’s almost 2001 and what a way to bring an end to another year, than with a night filled with good friends and good music. I couldn’t think of a better place to be in O.C. than Club Mesa.

The first band on, The Nixon Years, I am so glad I was on time to see their set. There was a decent size crowd, not what you’d expect for a Friday night, but to me that just means no line at the bar. Kurt (Guitar/Vocals), Gordon (Bass) & Eric (Drums) played a good variety of hard hitting songs, that had everyone singing along. They have great stage presence and are really fun to see live. Kurt is always on his knees or his back, tearing up his guitar with hard hitting riffs. Gordon is an amazing bass player and he’s not so bad to look at either. Together, they play so hard and loud, it’s hard to believe there’s only three of them making all that beautiful noise. The Nixon Years always put on a great show, they rock.

The next two bands Weaksauce and Potrait of Poverty were equally as raging. This was the first time I have ever seen either one of these bands, they did not disappoint. There’s always a few live ones in the crowd who make their presence known, that they are there to support their friends and tear it up. Both Weaksauce and Portrait of Poverty rocked it hard and had the crowd dancing, slamming and sweating a weeks worth of frustrations and having a good time doing it.

Weaksauce is everything you need in a hardcore band. Screaming vocals, shattering guitar, thump'n bass and kic kass fast drums! As they ripped up the stage, the crowd ripped up the floor of the Club Mesa bar in an impressive pit. Im definitely going to check out these guys again!

And talk about punk, you gotta give it up to Portrait of Poverty. Punk to the core! The vocalist of this bad just rips it up. He has a very distinct voice and shreds through you like a chainsaw. I highly suggest you check them out when they conquer your town!

The main event, Mr. Firley hits the stage and those remaining after 3 great punk bands, were in for a treat. Mr. Firley is classic punk at it’s finest. Mr. Firley is one of my favorite bands to see live for the obvious reasons, like they fucking rock, and they have a great time up there and it shows in the end product. Scott   blending his strong vocals with animated expressions and movements makes you went to get off your ass and join the party.

It was a extra added bonus to have Chuck on Guitar, (since he shares his talents with another band, U.S. Crush) he’s an amazing guitar player and it just adds another layer to the many facets of the band. Also showing off their hot stuff, Ariel on guitar, Lee on the drums, and how can I forget their fucking rockin bass player Jeff. Jeff is also an intricate part of the vocals on the many harmonizing songs Mr. Firley plays like "Mom I Need A Beer", I mean, "Sha, na, na’’s" don’’t work unless you have some help on the vocals. There’s nothing better than punkers in harmony. As I said before, there’s always a few in the crowd that are a little more over zealous than others, jumping up and joining along with the band, and this show. But is it a punk show if the fans are standing in the corner?

Scott looked like he was having fun pouring his beer down the throats and on the faces of his fans, willing to accept free beer. Mr. Firley ends every show with a song called "Blue Flame", yes, it’s about lighting your farts on fire. A definite crowd pleaser. At the end of Blue Flame is a real catchy special little thought they like to leave the crowd with, it’’s disgusting, it’s hilarious, it makes you think...and usually get pretty grossed out... and I’m not going to tell you.  It just wouldn’t be right for me to disclose that disgusting thought, you need to get off your ass and come on down and support your local music scene. All the bands rocked and I had a great time, but I usually do.. My motto, "Have a good time.. All the time"!!!
