Review by Snack Baggs I was really intrigued by tonight’s bill at the Showcase theatre, the evenings headliner was Tiger Army one of the best Psycho Billy bands from the Gloomy East Coast. But before I was to enjoy the stand up goodness of Tiger Army, I had to trek thru 1 ½ hours of nagging So Cal traffic. Due to this ever present nuances of our Highways I was unable to catch the opening band “Over my Dead Body,” so I cant say if they were good or bad. But not so for the second band, the punk as fuck band F-minus. If you like your Punk poppy, and your songs about bubble gum, you will not like F-minus, REPEAT you will not like F-minus. When you go to see F-minus you can expect a few things one, sexy female musicians, jarring vocals, and punk rock played at a blistering pace. Main singer Brad Logan logs the most time singing time, but the beautiful punk bookends, guitarist Erica Daking and bassist Jen Johnson of 4-gasm fame do their part to keep things fresh. But the punk rock gods were not kind tonight, as brad broke a string immediately into the first song. Playing through it like true professionals, they got back on track and fired off some insanely angst ridden hardcore punk. Following up next on the Showcase stage was Creep Division, an all-star band that consists of two parts Good Riddance, one part Sick of it All, and one part of the unknown. This was the first time I had seen them so I wasn’t familiar with their music. But I was familiar with feedback, and so was guitarist Russ R. He filled all the dead time between the songs with a ever-changing levels of intentional feed back. Singer and part time “Sick of it All” member “Craig Ahead” had mic in hand and looked a little uncomfortable with the new role. They play a punky hardcore style of music, great performance, but only ok music! Maybe the songs grow on you the more you hear them! But don’t quit your day jobs yet. Up next was the headliner, and band that I had wanted to see the three-piece psycho Billy sensation Tiger Army. If you haven’t heard, the buzz on Tiger Army, it seems at one time they were literally a one-man band. Singer Songwriter Nick 13 was the sole member of the band when approached by Hellcat owner Tim Armstrong about a possible record deal. So Nick threw a band together and here we are tonight here to see what all the buzz was. And boy am I glad I did, my advise is to you is see them quick while you still can because before you know it they may be huge! Blending Punk, rockabilly, a little country, and a sinister dark side to keep you at bay. Tiger Army played hits of their Self Titled Hellcat release like “were cat” and “Fuck the World” that had the teen crowd in frenzy of stage diving fanatics. With a the great Standup bass that is the trademark for any good Psycho Billy band. And just when the crowd was all warmed up they threw in a slow almost country like song that could make an old cowpoke cry in his beer. You must see this band when they come threw your hood. |
