Jeff Drake And The Handsome Devils, Diablo 44
Super Bees, Primitive Rollers, The Donalds

Club Mesa
Costa Mesa, CA
 Sept. 22, 2000

A Friday night at Club Mesa, can you think of a better way to spend it? Well, I cant. I arrived at in lovely Costa Mesa a tad bit late due to some freakish rain, so I just caught the tail end of The Donalds set. They sounded more punk than the rest of the bill, I'm sad I missed them. If I saw the Primitive Rollers, I forgot, I'm sorry about that.

Next up was Diablo 44. It was my first time seeing them, and they had a packed house to play for. I think it was their record release on Cabeza De Tornado Records, which the drummer promptly gave to me. They were very interactive with the crowd, giving out CD's, and having them sing along. It was nice to see. The vocalist Bobby has a great voice, dark, broody, very Cult like. Diablo 44 really impressed me, and I would like to check them out again.

The next band up was the SuperBees. They had a rock-a-billy feel, but a tad bit punker. They were tight, but sounded a bit generic. Although they gave out free stickers and pins (always a bonus).

Lastly was Jeff Drake and The Handsome Devils. You could see that Jeff had been drinking most of the night, but surprisingly enough it didn't effect his performance in the least. He has a voice reminiscent of The Crowd, and was telling jokes and getting the audience all riled up. It was definitely audience participation night at Club Mesa. I think all of the other bands have something out on Tornado Records also. They had a great turn out, and lots of support. Another well spent night at Club Mesa.
