X
In 1980 X emerged from the Los Angeles punk scene as the most critically lauded American band of that decade, both revitalizing and vindicating the West Coast scene, and putting Los Angeles back on the map with their landmark single "Los Angeles." The quintessential punk rockers quickly grew into a world-class, rock 'n roll band with their cutting edge, thought-provoking music that reflected the lifestyle of an unseen subculture. The group's frenzied rockabilly hybrid redefined the punk revolution taking it's inspiration from Woodie Guthrie, '50's Rockabilly and The Doors' Jim Morrison, while it's musical range invited comparisons to Charles Bukowski and Francis Bacon. The Doors' Ray Manzarek produced and played keyboards on X's debut album Los Angeles, which stands as one of the most astonishing debuts ever. Los Angeles ranked #4 on Spin Magazine's recent Top 50 Punk Albums of All Time and continues to be a major influence and inspiration to future musical generations. X is not only one of the best bands to come out of Los Angeles but America at large. The group has rolled out a catalogue of intricate, unique, compelling, thought-provoking and challenging music that continues to stand the test of time. The original members of X (John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and D.J. Bonebrake) were inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk on Tuesday June 25th, 2002, the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant contribution to the evolution of Rock 'n Roll. X's handprints, signatures, and Exene's Hooker Pump print will reside alongside such other accomplished musicians and innovators as B.B. King, George Martin, Johnny Cash, James Brown, Carl Perkins, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Brian Wilson, Carlos Santana, George Clinton & P Funk, Los Lobos, KISS, and Aerosmith among numerous others. Rhino Records' expanded/remastered releases of X's first three albums - Los Angeles, Wild Gift and Under The Big Black Sun were released last year, and Rhino just released the second set of X deluxe reissues with More Fun In The New World, Ain't Love Grand and See How We Are in expanded, remastered form. X will also headline the Hootenany Festival on July 6, 2002 at Hidden Valley. For more information on X, please visit xtheband.com.
