It’s kinda of strange for me to think that Guttermouth and Disney have
in a way collaborated to have a show and Guttermouth won! From the people
that bring you the happiest place on earth now give you a night of punk
with Guttermouth and The Deviates at the House of Blues at Downtown Disney
in Anaheim CA. I got there kinda of late because I was pounding some beers
in the parking lot because I wasn’t about to pay the extremely high
prices at the House of Blues! Now before I get to the review I have to
bitch about the H.O.B. For those of you that don’t know, in order for us
to take the pictures we do for these reviews we have to get a thing called
a “Photo Pass”. Now a photo pass usually means that the person wearing
the pass gets to take pictures of the show no questions asked. Well not
here at the wonderful House Of Blues!
NO SIR! So here I am sporting a bright yellow photo pass given to
me by the HOB but when I try to snap some pics I get some fat ass bouncer
telling me that pictures are not allowed! So I say “Well what the fuck
is this for” as I point to my ugly photo pass with my middle finger. So
then he tells me, “Ok you can take pictures but you cant use a flash”.
Cant use a flash? In a pitch black concert hall?!?! Fuck that! And Fuck
the House of Blues! So as you can see I only got a few pictures and they
aren’t the best because I had to take them while being chased down but
overweight numbskull bouncers that were trying to kick my ass out for
taking pictures WITH A PHOTO PASS! Anyway, with that out of the way here
is my review. So Im not really sure if there was a band that played before The Deviates but when I got there The Deviates were taking the stage. The Deviates to me are the best new punk band to come out lately. And they put on one fuck of a show. Now this wasn’t the first time I have seen The Deviate play but I have to say it was the best time. And I still cant get over how many people were there in support of them! Epitaph did a good move signing these guys. As always The Deviates bombarded the rowdy crowed with nothing but raw hard fast and loud tunes. And I really like how Brian’s voice is. It’s unique to the typical hardcore voice. And he is all over the stage and is good at getting people in the mood to pit. They played a great mix of oldies and new stuff off “Time is the Distance”. Nothing worse when a band only plays the new shit. But not these guys. If you haven’t seen these guys live yet then go out and see when they are playing near you because it’s gonna be a good time.
So now is about the time the bouncers caught me taking pictures with a
photo pass and were trying to escort me and my camera out, but just as we
neared the door fate would step up in the form of their manager. I told
him I had a fucking photo pass and that these cronies kicking me out was
bullshit. He told them to let me go but then told me not to take any more
pictures! Ha yeah right! I made my way up front to get ready to TAKE PICTURES of Guttermouth. As always I was very excited to see them play even thought this was about the 100th time I have seen them. You see, Im an older guy so I have seen these guys jam way before they were even signed with Dr. Strange at this little club that used to be called Spanky’s in Riverside. Needless to say I have been hooked on them ever since. Back then there was only about 20 people there to see them. But when I looked around it was insane to see the 100’s of kids there to see them tonight. They have come a long way! Anyway, Mark and the boys came out on stage and right away they and the crowd went apeshit! Bodies were flying left and right! Spit, sweat, blood and shoes were being flung all over the stage and well just about everywhere else! They too did a good job of playing a solid mix of songs off of just about every album they have ever put out. As they played, Mark spazzed out and got everyone in the place captivated on the stage. They put on a stage presents live like no other band in the world. If you have seen them live you know what Im talking about. It was a great show, well until big bruce bouncer and his gay lover decided to enforce the whole picture taking thing with me again and decided it would be best if they took away my camera. Yup, so the rest of the evening was spent yelling at them and their manager to get my camera back. So that’s my review. I did finally get my camera back but I have to say this. Next time you hear of your favorite band playing the House of Blues, I say don’t go. Go support them at a local spot and not a shitty corporate establishment like the HOB. - Scott Harding
