DEAD
LOW TIDE is:
Spencer Moody – vocals
Mike Kunka – bass, vocals
Coady Willis – drums
Nate Manny – guitars
Gabe - roadie
It started outside of the small
Northwestern town of Port Angeles, WA. In a dank horse stable on a
typical rainy December day. Over three days, these ex-members of
other bands explored their new world together. The expedition
roared, sometimes stumbled and later triumphed, resulting in 3
songs.
Actually,
I should back up about three months, when Mike Kunka, of the
recently broken up Enemymine, and Coady Willis of the freshly
stalemated The Murder City Devils ran into each other on Pike St
in Seattle. Mike said, “I’m starting something new, want to
play drums?” While Coady echoed, “We’re starting something
new, too, want to play bass?” is something how it went. That
meeting evolved into the hay-strewn jam session, which probably
immediately lead to a few deaf horses, but eventually led to the
first 10 songs and an upcoming tour this March, highlighted by a
performance at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX.
As
comfortable as the former MCD’ers were playing together, they
were are all very keen to add Kunka to the mix. Just ask Willis,
“I've been a fan of Mike's music for a long time, and he
definitely brings his own style to the songs.
Sometimes it's sad and pretty, then abrasive and crushing all at
once. It's the best music I've been a part of.”
Strangely
enough, Kunka had never been in a band with a guitarist. Both his
previous acts, Godheadsilo and Enemymine, featured dual bass
players and no guitars. It doesn’t seem to be a problem for him,
when asked, Kunka simply replied, “Fuck that! I've known
these guys for years and always saw them out on tour and everybody
seemed really nice. I like hard workers, nice people and rock
music. Thanks a lot." When
you hear the songs of Dead Low Tide you will hear their members’
former bands swirling around in them.
Who
couldn’t recognize the howl of vocalist Moody, with the soul of
a magnificent barfly, delighting us with veteran tales of a man
scorned, peering out through childlike eyes; You hear bass lines
that can only come from Kunka’s “Ridiculous Looking 8 String
Bass,” which breeds contempt, anger AND sorrow; or Manny’s
guitar sounds that soar anthemically, yet evolve through error and
grace where they left off with MCD’s “Thelema;” and
Willis’ groove-soaked pounding of the drums that don’t allow a
body to stand still in the house.
No
one here is trying to put their past behind them. Instead,
they’re starting a new chapter where they move into a new era,
rich in history, but focused on expanding the boundaries well
beyond what they once knew. Says guitarist Manny, "At
the end of The Murder City Devils, we were just starting to try a
lot of different things in songs, and that kind of dropped us
right into the new band. Dead Low Tide only has three instruments,
as opposed to five and has forced us to learn a new language, to
write differently. So
far the challenge has been to not play like I did in the Murder
City Devils, where every second was filled with sound, and to take
advantage of the open space in this band. It's a whole new
ballgame."
